1. Donald Trump’s second impeachment trial begins today. Lawmakers will relive the violent events of Jan. 6 as House Democrats prosecute their case for “incitement of insurrection.” Lawyers for Trump say he was exercising freedom of speech when he told his supporters to “fight like hell” to overturn his defeat. 2. The U.S. tops 27 million covid-19 cases with over 465,000 deaths. The Maine CDC reported 1 new death and 201 new cases on Monday bringing Maine’s death toll to 636 with 124 Mainers currently hospitalized. Nearly 53,000 Mainers have received both vaccination doses. (WMTW)
3. Jason Riddle of N.H. who said he “chugged” wine amid the chaos of the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol was arrested Monday by the FBI and is facing federal charges. Riddle’s arrest brings the total number of individuals arrested by the FBI Boston Division in connection with the riots at the U.S. Capitol to six. The FBI received tips from people who had seen Riddle do an interview on NBC10 Boston. (MASS LIVE)
4. A campaign to ban flavored tobacco sales in Maine is underway. According to CDC Data from 2019, one in three high school students in Maine smoked and four out of five kids who use tobacco started with a flavored product. Several bills will be ready to discuss this legislative session. (WGME)
