1. Public safety officials are boosting security around the State House in Augusta. It comes as the FBI is warning of plans for armed protests at all 50 state capitals in the days leading up to the inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden. (WMTW)
2. The US tops 22.6 million Covid-19 cases with over 376,000 related deaths. The Maine CDC reported 6 new deaths and 313 new cases on Monday. Maine’s death toll is 438 with 195 Mainers currently hospitalized. Nearly 50,000 Mainers have been vaccinated. (WMTW)
3. A new drive-thru COVID-19 testing site is opening at Lewiston Middle School. Teachers and staff will be able to get tested. Lewiston schools are currently fully remote and have been since the holidays. The testing site opens at 10 a.m. Tuesday and they’re hoping to fill every slot. (WGME)
4. Bill Belichick will not be accepting the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Belichick said “the tragic events of last week occurred and the decision has been made not to move forward with the award. Above all, I am an American citizen with great reverence for our nation’s values, freedom and democracy.” The Pats’ coach added, “I know I also represent my family and the New England Patriots team. One of the most rewarding things in my professional career took place in 2020 when, through the great leadership within our team, conversations about social justice, equality and human rights moved to the forefront and became actions.” (TMZ)
5. Ben & Jerry’s developed frozen dog treats called Doggie Desserts. Two flavors named after its employees’ pets were introduced: Pontch’s Mix, which is peanut butter with a pretzel swirl, and Rosie’s Batch, a mix of pumpkin and mini cookies. A sunflower butter base instead of dairy is used to be gentler on dogs’ stomachs. (CNBC)
