1. A San Antonio doctor who wrote a Washington Post op-ed claiming that he had violated Texas’ six-week abortion ban now faces at least two lawsuits brought against him under the ban. This is the first known challenge under the new law. (WMTW)
2. A record number of people (214) were hospitalized with COVID-19 across Maine on Monday. 90 percent of all ICU patients in Maine were unvaccinated and 65 to 75 percent of all hospitalizations involved people who were not fully vaccinated. (PRESS HERALD)
3. A mask mandate will not be reinstated in the city of Portland, for now. In a split 4-4 vote, the Portland City Council voted down another indoor mask mandate Monday night. The mandate is expected to be on the agenda again at the council’s next meeting on Oct.(WMTW)
4. A new social media challenge that has students destroying or stealing from school bathrooms is catching on in Maine. The “Devious Licks” challenge, which is currently spreading on TikTok, shows videos of students trashing their school bathrooms. TikTok is telling its users to stop — the social media platform has removed the videos from its feeds, saying the content violates its guidelines. (WMTW)
5. Apple’s iOS15 was released yesterday. New features include the ability to FaceTime Windows and Android users, AI that can better identify items in photos, and Focus, which better controls limits on notifications. Apple is planning to launch a feature called SharePlay that lets you watch a movie or TV show with other people over FaceTime. But that feature isn’t included yet and is now promised for later this year. (ELITE DAILY)
