1. The second week of the Derek Chauvin trial continued Tuesday. The Lt. who was in charge of use-of-force training at the time of Floyd’s arrest said using a knee on a person’s neck “isn’t unauthorized” when using force. He confirmed that once a person is handcuffed and under control, the technique would no longer be authorized. (NEWS CENTER)
2. The U.S. tops 30.8 million covid-19 cases with more than 556,000 related deaths. The Maine CDC reported no new deaths and 290 new cases on Tuesday keeping Maine’s death toll at 746 with 80 Mainers currently hospitalized. More than 23.5% of Mainers have received their final covid vaccine dose. (WMTW)
3. Mainers 16 years and older are now eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine. The state’s vaccination timeline was accelerated in response to a dramatic increase in doses from the federal government. (WMTW)
4. Goodwill is asking Mainers to stop donating trash (broken furniture, used car batteries, single shoes). In recent years, wishcycling of 13.2 million pounds has ended up costing New England-based Goodwills $1.2 million in waste removal. (WGME)
