1. The U.S. tops 33.4 million covid-19 cases with more than 600,000 related deaths. The number of lives lost is greater than the population of Baltimore or Milwaukee. It is about equal to the number of Americans who died of cancer in 2019. Worldwide, the death toll stands at about 3.8 million. The Maine CDC reported 3 new deaths and 29 new cases on Tuesday bringing Maine’s death toll at 848. Nearly 56% of Mainers are fully vaccinated. (NEWS CENTER)
2. Boothbay summer residents John and Leslie Malone donated $25 million to Maine Med, the largest donation in the hospital’s 150 year history. Leslie received cardiac care at Maine Med. The Congress St. building under construction will be named the Malone Family Tower. (WMTW)
3. On Tuesday evening, Ashanti Dwight Williams became what is believed to be the first Black member of the Biddeford City Council when fellow councilors voted unanimously to approve his appointment to fill an unexpired term.
4. Two Maine nonprofits were among the 286 organizations to receive donations from MacKenzie Scott and her husband Dan Jewett, a Maine native. Scott announced Tuesday that she has given $2.7 billion to organizations across the country. 317 Main Community Music Center in Yarmouth received $1.5 million. Maine Community Foundation’s Maine Expansion Arts Fund received a $2.5 million donation. (WMTW)
