1. A 65-year-old Asian woman was kicked in the stomach and stomped on in New York City. The attacker made anti-Asian statements while assaulting. This comes amid a surge in anti-Asian hate crimes. Mainers gathered in Payson Park yesterday for a candlelight vigil to honor the memories of Asian Americans who have recently died at the hands of violence. (WGME)
2. A firefighter who voiced frustration at being prevented from using her EMT training to help George Floyd will be back on the stand today in the trial of Derek Chauvin. Several onlookers testified yesterday describing their increasing frustration, anger and despair as they begged Chauvin to take his knee off Floyd’s neck. (AP)
3. The U.S. tops 30.3 million covid-19 cases with more than 550,000 related deaths. The Maine CDC reported 2 new deaths and 223 new cases on Tuesday bringing Maine’s death toll to 738 with 78 Mainers currently hospitalized. Over 259,000 Mainers have received their final COVID-19 vaccine dose, which represents more than 19% of the population. (WMTW)
4. Ogunquit Playhouse says they will open with Monty Python’s “Spamalot” from June 16 to July 10. The pavilion is designed to host a socially distanced audience. Masking will be required at all times. No indoor shows are planned. (WGME)
5. The Portland Sea Dogs will have fans in the stands starting May 4. Games will be at 28% capacity, which represents 2,087 fans. Seating pods that range from sets of two to eight seats will be set up at least 6 feet from each other. (WMTW)
