1. The human remains found in a Wyoming national forest Sunday are those of Gabby Petito, the FBI confirmed Tuesday. Petito’s cause of death was ruled a homicide. Officials continue to search for Petito’s fiance, Brian Laundrie, nearly three weeks after he returned from a cross-country van trip without her. (PRESS HERALD)
2. Maine marked a grim milestone on Tuesday as total deaths in the state associated with COVID-19 surpassed 1,000. As of Tuesday, 225 (a record high) were hospitalized with COVID-19, 82 were in the ICU and 35 were on ventilators. (WMTW)
3. Former Republican Governor Paul LePage will officially kick off his campaign Wednesday night to take on Governor Janet Mills. LePage can run again in 2022 because he sat out one full term. Wednesday’s event for LePage is at the Augusta Civic Center. (WGME)
4. The University of Southern Maine on Tuesday received its largest monetary gift. The $10 million donation for a new music school comes from philanthropist Suzi Osher, in honor of her late husband. USM expects to break ground on the new music school in Portland in the spring of 2023. (WMTW)
5. For the first time since the start of the pandemic the Cumberland fair is set to open on September 26. On September 30 it will feature a COVID vaccine clinic. Maine CDC will be offering the one-and-done J&J shot.
