1. Nearly 4 years after his death, three men, including a Mafia hitman, have been charged in the killing of Boston crime boss James “Whitey” Bulger in a West Virginia prison. Questions about why the known “snitch” was placed in the general population instead of more protective housing have been raised.
2. Federal prosecutors rested their case on Thursday against Kyle Fitzsimons, the first of the five Maine residents who are charged for their participation in the Capitol riot. The most serious of the 11 counts in his indictment accuses Fitzsimons of assaulting two Washington police officers.
3. Nurses at Maine Med voted to keep their union. 74% of nurses voted in favor of the union during the vote, held Wednesday and Thursday. Nurses expect to finish bargaining their first contract with Maine Med in the next several weeks.
4. More than 100,000 people are expected to attend the Great Falls Balloon Festival this weekend in Lewiston. This year’s theme is ‘Returning from the Wild.” The first balloon launch was at 6am.
