3. LeBron James’ record 51-point effort wasn’t enough to hold off the Golden State Warriors, who beat the Cleveland Cavaliers 124-114 in Game 1 of the NBA Finals on Thursday. While the Warriors started the fourth quarter with a six-point lead, the teams went back and forth; the game went into overtime thanks to a flub by Cavs player J.R. Smith–who incorrectly thought his team led by one and tried to dribble out the clock. In OT, the Warriors pulled away and a Tristan Thompson ejection led to a minor scuffle. While James became just the sixth player in N.B.A. history to score 50 points in a finals game, he also became the first of the six to take a loss.
