1. The United States coronavirus cases top 1,417,000. America’s death toll stands at more than 85,900. Ousted vaccine chief Dr. Rick Bright has warned Congress that “2020 could be the darkest winter in modern history” because of COVID-19.
2. Three new coronavirus-related deaths and 50 new coronavirus cases were reported in Maine on Thursday, bringing the death toll to 69 and the statewide case number to 1,565 of which 538 are active. The bulk of new cases appear to be either among close contacts of confirmed cases or in the 4 counties where community transmission is happening.
3. The Mills Administration announced Thursday that, effective immediately, Maine lodging establishments can begin accepting future reservations for stays with an arrival date of June 1 and beyond for Maine residents and for non-residents who comply with the State’s 14-day quarantine requirement.
4. Portland’s annual Fourth of July celebration, which attracts thousands to the Eastern Promenade, has been canceled. City officials cited continued COVID-19 rules against large gatherings and budget issues. Bangor has postponed their Fourth of July celebration until September 5th, during Labor Day weekend.
5. A new study finds that men are less likely to wear face masks in public than women because they think it’s “not cool.” “Men more than women agree that wearing a face covering is shameful, not cool, a sign of weakness, and a stigma,” the study states. Researchers also found that men likelier to believe that COVID-19 won’t seriously impact their health, despite data showing the opposite.
