1. On Thursday, President Trump sent a letter to Kim Jong Un, informing the North Korean leader that their June 12 meeting in Singapore had been canceled. In this letter, according to The New York Times, Trump expressed anger at recent comments a North Korean official made about Vice President Mike Pence, whom the official called “ignorant and stupid.” In his letter, Trump communicated to Kim, “Some day, I look very much forward to meeting you.” If Trump and Kim eventually meet, it will mark the first sit-down between the country’s two leaders since the Korean War in the 1950s. Meanwhile, Trump misspelled Kim Jong Un’s name when he tweeted, “Sadly, I was forced to cancel the Summit Meeting in Singapore with Kim Jung [sic] Un.”

2. As reported by NewsCenter Maine… In Maine, a black market for baby eels has gotten so bad that the Commissioner of the Department of Marine Resources says it’s like a drug trade. Illegal elver sales have gotten so out of control, the commissioner has shut down the two-month fishery two weeks early. This year, baby eels were selling for about $2,500 per pound. Maine fishermen sell their catch to Asian markets, where they are farmed for food. There are only 425 licenses in the state, and those lucky enough to catch baby eels can make a lot of money in a short period of time.

3. The Wells High School Mascot Advisory Committee will recommend discontinuing the use of Native American imagery while keeping the Warriors nickname, based on the results of Wednesday’s secret ballot. The voting totals were announced Thursday in a press release from the Wells-Ogunquit Community School District, after the Portland Press Herald had informed the committee it was likely violating open meeting laws by keeping the results secret. The committee’s chair, Rick Coyne, had declined to release results of the voting Wednesday night. Several Maine high schools have eliminated Native American nicknames, including Scarborough (2001), Old Town (2006), Wiscasset (2011) and Sanford (2012). Husson University in Bangor changed its nickname from Braves to Eagles in 2004. Wells and Skowhegan are the only Maine high schools that still use Native American imagery.
