1. Cumberland County and the midcoast region were reclassified as high risk for COVID-19 on Thursday as the statewide number of hospitalized patients with the virus spiked to 193, the highest level since late February.
2. The city of Portland says it has no more shelter or hotel capacity for asylum seekers. Families sent to Portland will no longer be guaranteed shelter at this time. Because of a staffing shortage, Portland says they also cannot guarantee that they will help families find emergency housing.
3. The state has released a draft of a plan that aims to rein in the number of obscene vanity license plates that are on Maine streets. Staff will recall or reject plates which: Are profane or obscene. Make a derogatory reference to age, race, ethnicity, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, ancestry or national origin, religion or physical or mental disability. Connote genitalia or relate to sexual acts.
4. Intuit TurboTax will pay $141 million nationwide to customers who were deceived by misleading promises of free tax-filing services. Mainer’s share is more than $700,000. The money is for anyone who used TurboTax for tax years from 2016 through 2018 and were told they had to pay a fee.
