1. Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton will face off in their first presidential debate in New York tonight, and it’s expected to be one of the most widely watched presidential debates since the one between Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan back in 1980. Lester Holt will moderate. Holt is the first black journalist to moderate a presidential debate since 1992. (US)
2. Jose Fernandez, the ace right-hander for the Miami Marlins who escaped Cuba to become one of baseball’s brightest stars, was killed in a boating accident early Sunday morning. Fernandez was 24. He and two other people died when their 32-foot vessel slammed into a jetty off Miami Beach, authorities said. (PH)
3. Arnold Palmer, considered the “King of Golf,” died in Pittsburgh on Sunday. He was 87. A beloved figure in the game, Palmer won 62 titles on the PGA Tour during his career. (USA)
4. A majority of Maine voters favor legalizing marijuana for recreational use, according to a new Portland Press Herald poll showing a groundswell of support among residents under age 50 and among those living in southern or coastal areas. Maine is one of five states – along with Massachusetts, Arizona, Nevada and California – that will vote on marijuana legalization in November, making 2016 a pivotal year in the long-running policy debate over pot.
