1. Cristina Lewis, a Mainer from Auburn held the presidential flag and stood just feet away from former President George H.W. Bush’s casket Wednesday during his funeral. Thousands of people came out Wednesday night to pay their respects to President George H. W. Bush as his body lied in repose at Saint Martin’s Episcopal Church in Houston until 6 a.m. today. After three days of remembrance in Washington, a plane brought Bush’s casket for his funeral’s closing ceremonies in Houston and burial today at his family plot on the presidential library grounds at Texas A&M University in College Station. 2. Portland police are investigating separate assaults in the Deering Highlands neighborhood. Police said on Nov. 15, a woman was walking into her Woodford Street apartment when a man forced his way in and assaulted her. The second assault was reported Tuesday night when a man broke into a Highland Street home through a window, police said. The resident and the man fought briefly before the man ran off. Officers have stepped up patrols in the area. Police said they want residents to be aware of their surroundings, keep lights on and not walk alone. (WMTW)

As Bush and his wife, Laura Bush, entered the National Cathedral ahead of the state funeral for his father, former President George H.W. Bush appeared to slip a piece of candy to Michelle Obama as he shook her hand, leading to a smile from the former first lady.
