1. Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves signed a bill into law that ditched the state flag–the last in the U.S. to feature the Confederate battle emblem. “Now, more than ever, we must lean on that faith, put our divisions behind us, and unite for a greater good,” Reeves said. (NY TIMES)
2. Wednesday was an all-time record for a single day in the U.S, with 50,203 new coronavirus cases. California cases jumped nearly 50 percent in the last week, and hospitalizations were up 43 percent in the last 24 hours. Arizona had record single-day highs for new cases, deaths, ER visits and hospitalizations on Wednesday. Florida added another 6,500 cases yesterday, and are closing beaches ahead of the July 4 weekend. Louisiana, Georgia and Texas all set new daily records for new cases Wednesday. (AP)
3. The Maine CDC reported no new coronavirus-related deaths and 41 new cases on Wednesday. The 41 new cases brings the total in Maine to 3,294 with 518 active. The statewide death toll remains at 105. (WMTW)
4. Governor Janet Mills announced that exemptions to Maine’s 14-day quarantine requirement for out-of-state visitors will be extended to visitors from Connecticut, New York and New Jersey. The governor also announced an executive order requiring Maine’s large retail stores, lodging establishments, restaurants and outdoor bars and tasting rooms in the coastal counties and in the more populous cities of Bangor, Brewer, Lewiston and Auburn, to enforce the state’s face covering requirement. 5. Iowa has become the first state to permanently legalize to-go cocktails amid the coronavirus crisis. The Distilled Spirits Council of the United States says making to-go cocktails permanent “provides a much-needed source of stability and revenue for bars, restaurants and distilleries.” (FORBES)
