1. The coronavirus outbreak in the United States is stabilizing. “We are nearing the peak right now,” the CDC director said, as infections top 582,000, including more than 23,000 deaths. (CNN)
2. President Trump says that it is he, and not local leaders, who will decide when to relax social-distancing measures and reopen the U.S. economy. Many argue that Trump’s guidelines have little force when compared to local regulations, which carry fines and other penalties and extend to early summer in some places. (AP)
3. Here in Maine state health officials reported a surge of 65 new cases on Monday for a total of 698. That’s the largest day-to-day increase in cases to date in Maine. The Maine CDC says 19 people have died from the coronavirus, 124 people have been hospitalized and 273 people have recovered. The more than 10 percent jump in confirmed cases appears to be linked to an outbreak at the Augusta Center for Health and Rehabilitation. 41 patients and 14 staff members have tested positive. 4. Bernie Sanders endorsed Joe Biden for president during a joint livestream on Monday. Sanders told Biden that while there’s “no great secret that you and I have our differences, we’ve got to make Trump a one-term president.” Sanders added that Trump was “the most dangerous president in the modern history of America.” (AP)
5. Right now, 1/3 of the astronauts in space are Mainers! On Monday York native Chris Cassidy and Caribou native Jessica Meir at the International Space Station took some time to talk to Maine students. It was originally going to be at the Collins Center on the University of Maine’s Orono campus. But because of COVID-19, students instead had to record themselves asking their questions in advance.
