1. The United States coronavirus cases top 1.6 million. America’s death toll stands at more than 98,000. Packing beaches, pool parties and outdoor gatherings happened all over the US this weekend. Officials with the World Health Organization said a second peak during this first wave of the virus is possible — especially if countries discontinue public health and social measures that help slow the virus’ spread. (CNN)

2. No new coronavirus-related deaths and 19 new coronavirus cases were reported in Maine on Monday, keeping the death toll to 78 and bringing the statewide case number to 2,074 of which 706 are active. Nearly 1,300 Mainers have recovered from the virus. (PRESS HERALD)

3. The U.S. government plans to use as many as 100,000 volunteers to test a potential coronavirus vaccine by the end of 2020. The project would shrink what would normally be a 10-year testing process into mere months. Dr. Anthony Fauci says, “If all the cards fall into the right place, you definitely could get a vaccine by December or January.” (REUTERS)

4. Two hair stylists at the same Great Clips salon in Missouri might have exposed about 140 people to the coronavirus. Both stylists wore face coverings while working, as did their clients. One stylist worked for eight days with symptoms; the other worked for five days with “mild” symptoms. Hair salons have been open in Missouri since May 4. Said one customer, “All of this because someone wasn’t responsible. They should have stayed home.” (NBC NEWS)

5. Portland’s Memorial Day parade was pared down to a single man – retired Army 1st Sgt. Richard Cobb – carrying an American flag amid a police escort. Cobb marched the half-mile stretch of Congress Street from Longfellow Square to Monument Square. When he arrived at Monument Square, Cobb laid a wreath at the foot of the Our Lady of Victory statue in front of about 30 people, including buglers and members of the American Legion. (PRESS HERALD)
