1. A proposal in Augusta is trying to ban conversion therapy in Maine. The practice, which is banned in 13 states, attempts to change a young person’s sexuality. Last year, lawmakers passed a similar proposal, but it was vetoed by Gov. Paul LePage. A public hearing is scheduled for today at 10 a.m. (WMTW)
2. New York City officials on Tuesday declared a public health emergency and ordered mandatory measles vaccinations to halt an outbreak concentrated among ultra-Orthodox Jews in Brooklyn, putting in place the broadest vaccination order in the United States in nearly three decades. New York’s mandatory vaccination order in four Brooklyn zip codes is by far the toughest action to date by state or local officials. (Press Herald)
3. Federal data shows Maine had among the highest rates of non-medical vaccine exemptions in 2017-2018. Maine could end non-medical exemptions for routine childhood vaccines required by schools and certain health care facilities. The Legislature’s Education and Cultural Affairs Committee is set to hold a work session on the bill Wednesday. (WGME)
4. Maine’s largest city ranked No. 23 out of 125 best places to live by U.S. News and World Report. Portland was the only New England city to break the top 25. Portland was awarded 7 out of 10 overall points, with higher marks for quality of life and job market. It also got high marks for a crime rate far below the national average. (Press Herald)
