1. Hurricane Fiona threatened to strengthen into a Category 4 storm Wednesday. The storm was blamed for causing at least four direct deaths.
2. After 43 years of unrestricted school choice, the Portland Public Schools Board of Education voted 5-2 Tuesday night to limit school choice. This year’s eighth-graders, the Class or 2027, still will be able to choose between the district’s two largest high schools, but if student populations are not balanced the district will be able to shuffle students from one school to the other in order to make the student population sizes more equal.
3. Pixelle, the paper mill in Jay, will close at the beginning of 2023. Around 230 people are employed at the mill and will be affected by its closure.
4. The Sea Dogs lost their first playoff game 9-4 yesterday at Hadlock. They’ll have to win the next 2 games in New Jersey in order to advance.
5. The city of Portland is once again searching for the perfect tree for Monument Square for the winter season. Qualifications – 45 to 60 feet tall; Evergreen, Spruce or Fir; accessible for retrieval. The city is asking all applicants to submit pictures for their tree at PortlandMaine.com/Tree no later than Nov. 1.
