Chance The Rapper loves his hometown. He organizes open mics for young, aspiring artists. He began an anti-gun violence campaign on social media. He has even written a handful of love letters to Chicago… But as if none of that was enough, Chance decided to bring a music festival to Chi-Town: The Magnificent Coloring Day.
The festival took place for the first time on Saturday, September 24th at U.S. Cellular Field, home of the Chicago White Sox. The lineup was nothing short of magnificent – performers included John Legend, Tyler, The Creator, Lil Wayne, 2Chainz, Alicia Keys, and a special guest appearance from Kanye West. In case you haven’t seen the videos already, here’s a look at the crowd’s reaction when Kanye took the stage:
Despite a record-breaking stadium attendance of 47,754 fans, the festival did endure a couple of setbacks. Firstly, Young Thug did not show up for his scheduled 2:40pm set. Second, there was a “restricted view” portion of seating at the festival. “Restricted view” is a nicer way of saying “you won’t be able to see the stage at all”. Many attendants were very frustrated – and rightfully so – that they paid for a ticket, but could only watch their favorite performers on the screen.
All things considered, an action-packed afternoon earned far more praise than criticism.
We can expect to see the festival prosper in the future as the 23-year-old hometown hero continues to learn.
