Well, that was quick! Just days after releasing the response to Kendrick’s verse on “Like That” by Future & Metro Boomin’, J. Cole is already feeling remorse for getting tangled up in the hype of the situation. During his set at his annual Dreamville Festival over the weekend, Cole addressed the situation in front of a crowd of thousands saying, “I’m so proud of that project, except for one part. It’s one part of that sh*t that makes me feel like, ‘man that’s the lamest sh*t I did in my f*ckin’ life, right? And I know this is not what a lot of people want to hear.”
He went on to talk about Kendrick Lamar’s greatness and how much respect he has for somebody that has also been at the top of the game about as long as he has. He said, “I ain’t gonna lie to y’all, the past two days felt terrible. It let me know how good I’ve been sleeping for the past 10 years,” and claimed he wants to get back to his true path. It even felt evident in the verse where Cole dissed Kendrick that his heart wasn’t fully in it. While, yes, he did diss Kendrick, the verse did still have some level of respect for him sprinkled in it as Cole referenced how good some of K.Dot’s projects are.
Maybe this beef and subsequent quick squashing of it can finally lead us to that elusive J. Cole & Kendrick joint project? Maybe this is all a ploy to create some hype for it. Maybe I’m just grasping at straws in hopes that it really does come to fruition. Also, where’s Drake’s response in all of this? Something tells me we’ve yet to hear the last of this saga.
