The biggest hit of Latto’s career thus far almost never was, and if it weren’t for crossing paths with hitmaker and songwriter Theron Thomas, we may have heard Cardi B telling us about BDE instead.
As a guest on the See, The Thing Is… podcast, Theron talked about how his process of finding the term “big dick energy” on Twitter led him to craft the hit that we know today as Latto’s. After writing the song to the beat that samples Mariah Carey’s “Fantasy”, Theron met Latto who had informed him that she “wanted to do some crossover shit”. Before “Big Energy”, we hadn’t heard Latto getting into her pop bag much, but it’s safe to say this opened up a whole new lane for her.
Theron went on to say, “When I meet an artist and they tell me they want to do something, it’s like okay cool. Cardi never got to hear it. We didn’t get it to her. Latto changed the verses, the words, and made it better. True story.”
It makes you wonder just what it would sound like if Cardi B DID get a crack at it. With how things are in the world of music these days, I’m sure there’s an AI version with Cardi B’s voice floating around somewhere.
