Many people have suffered some form of bullying throughout school and that also means some of our favorite stars have as well. Ruby Rose has suffered bullying from classmates about being different.
The 33-year-old gender-fluid actress, who came out as a lesbian at age 12, hopes her starring role on The CW’s new series Batwoman lets viewers know they’re not alone. This will be the first TV series headlined by an out LGBTQ superhero. Rose, who has said she is bipolar, believes society has come a long way in accepting different groups and says she is seeing greater representation of them on television.

In the show, she will play Kate Kane, Batman’s cousin, who is described as a highly trained fighter that speaks her mind. Being the first lesbian superhero on TV was the result of ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’, a law which once prohibited ‘out’ gays and lesbians from serving in the US armed forces, and kept those already doing so in the closet. Her character gets kicked out of the military because she identifies as a lesbian and Rose says “…there’s immediately a lot of weight on [the] scene.”
There definitely has been more acceptance and representation of different people on television, but Rose said she still finds social media “terrifying” because it puts a lot of pressure on kids today and it can affect kids being their true selves. She says she wants young people to be able to identify and relate to characters they’re watching on Batwoman. Looks like Ruby Rose and The CW are paving the way for change on television, giving young viewers a place to feel accepted, as well as starting a discussion about the issues that the show will address.
