Last week, Kim Kardashian West created controversy when she announced her new shape wear line Kimono Solutionwear. The reality star received backlash on social media because many people believe that it is appropriation of the traditional Japanese kimono.

Japan’s trade minister Hiroshige Seko says the kimono belongs to Japan. He says “The kimono is regarded around the world as a distinct part of our culture…. Even in America, kimono is well known to be Japanese.” After the backlash, Kim K decided to change the name for her line:
I am always listening, learning and growing – I so appreciate the passion and varied perspectives that people bring to me. When I announced the name of my shapewear line, I did so with the best intentions in mind.

My brands and products are built with inclusivity and diversity at their core and after careful thought and consideration, I will be launching my Solutionwear brand under a new name. I will be in touch soon. Thank you for your understanding and support always.

He acknowledges that Kardashian West would be renaming the brand but says he will still be sending officials for a meeting at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on July 9th. The minister says he wanted a “careful examination” of the issue. He also added that Japan will continue to monitor the situation in the future.
In many people’s opinion, Kim Kardashian West is in the wrong with her name choice because many people were offended and it paid no respect for the kimono. So changing the name is definitely in the best interest for the brand.
