Okay…that sounds a little dramatic, but that’s straight from the words of The Wee..err, Abel Tesfaye himself!
What he really means is that he’s feeling like it’s about time to retire the persona altogether. In a recent interview with W Magazine where The Weeknd highlighted his upcoming HBO series, The Idol, he mentioned how he feels almost as if this era has run its course.
“I’m going through a cathartic path right now,” the XO head honcho said. “It’s getting to a place and a time where I’m getting ready to close the Weeknd chapter. I’ll still make music, maybe as Abel, maybe as The Weeknd. But I still want to kill The Weeknd. And I will. Eventually. I’m definitely trying to shed that skin and be reborn.”
He has hinted that the current album he’s working on, which would complete the trilogy that After Hours and Dawn FM have started, might be his “last hurrah” as The Weeknd. The good news in all of this, though, is that he says he’ll still be making music no matter what persona he chooses to be.
