2. The Biden administration issued rules to airlines that require carriers to offer immediate cash refunds for canceled or delayed flights. Under the new rules, the Department of Transportation deems a significant delay to be at least three hours for domestic flights and six hours for international ones. Airlines can offer travel credit or a different flight, but passengers can opt for cash instead. The new refund rules also apply for checked bags, internet, and seat selection fees. (AP)
3. Egg prices in the U.S. have gone up because of a multi-state breakout of the bird flu. A dozen large grade A eggs now cost $2.99 on average. The price is 16 percent higher than January 2024. The bird flu outbreak has affected nine million chickens across the country, leading to less egg supply. The deadliest bird flu crisis took place in 2022 where egg prices shot up to an average of $4.25 per dozen. (CBS)
4. The Casco Bay Island Transit District voted 10-1 on Thursday to approve an 82% fare increase.. It’s the ferry service’s first ticket rate hike in 15 years. Starting June 1, it will cost $14 to visit Peaks Island, Great Diamond Island and other islands served by Casco Bay Lines. (PH)
