1. At least 106 are confirmed to have died in the Maui wildfires. Only a percentage of the burn area has been searched, so the death toll is expected to rise. A recent analysis found that the disaster may have done $7 billion in damage to the island. (JN)
2. Asylum seekers who have been staying in the Portland Expo will move to hotels in Lewiston and Freeport when the temporary shelter closes today. The state and the city of Portland will foot the hotel bills with the state covering around 70% of the cost and the city 30%. The city said it expects to spend around $500,000 on the hotels. (PH)
3. USM celebrated the opening of Portland Commons, a 580-bed residential hall, with a ribbon cutting Tuesday at its Portland campus. The Bedford Street residence hall is the school’s first on the Portland campus. Until this semester, USM has only offered a dorm option in Gorham. (PH)
4. Maine high school basketball star Cooper Flagg announced he will reclassify to graduate next spring and be eligible for the NBA Draft in 2025. He is expected to attend Duke for one season before likely becoming the top overall pick in the 2025 draft. (NCM)
