1. Vandals caused an overnight power outage for some Central Maine Power customers. CMP says a vandal drove a forklift into a transmission line around 3:30 a.m., knocking out power for roughly 6,800 customers in Lewiston and Auburn. CMP was able to use automation to restore power to most customers within 10 minutes. (WMTW)
2. Tropical Storm Ernesto is moving out to sea, but its effects will be felt here in Maine over the next 24 hours. Experts are warning of powerful and dangerous rip currents at Maine beaches through Monday night. Through the day today, Maine beaches will see large breaking waves of 5 to 7 feet, creating dangerous swimming and surfing conditions. (WGME)
3. Train track construction in Wells will impact Amtrak Downeaster service from Aug. 18 to 25. It’s part of a project intended to improve and expand train service. A combination of trains and charter busses will be used to provide service on trains 681 & 686. Trains 683 & 684 are canceled. (WMTW)
4. A recently announced $450 million federal grant aimed at reducing climate pollution across New England could help Maine meet its ambitious goal to place thousands of heat pumps in low-income homes and expand a critical subset of HVAC technicians trained to install them. The grant would reduce greenhouse gas emissions and help protect Mainers from extreme cold and heat in residential buildings .(NCM)
