1. Journalist and 2014 Bowdoin Alum, Evan Gershkovich, has been released from a Russian jail in a multi-country prison swap. Gershkovich was arrested in 2023, convicted of espionage, and was sentenced to 16 years. The Bowdoin community has been active in defending Gershkovich and calling for his release. (PH)
2. Police are continuing to collect evidence and speak to witnesses following Tuesday night’s deadly shooting at Morrill’s Corner in Portland. Police have not shared any information about a suspect or suspects in connection with the shooting, but they said they would provide updates to the public as the case allows. (WMTW)
3. A box truck had its roof ripped off Thursday morning as it tried to pass underneath the Brown Street Bridge in Westbrook. “Please pay attention to those big yellow signs that tell you how tall the bridge actually is…..,” police wrote on FB. (WMTW)
4. The National Weather Service said the heat advisory that expired Thursday will resume from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. today for York County. The heat index values are expected to be in the mid- to upper 90s. (WMTW)
5. Simone Biles grabbed her sixth Olympic gold medal by winning the women’s gymnastics all-around. Sunisa Lee won the bronze medal. In swimming, Kate Douglass won her first Olympic gold medal by winning the women’s 200m breaststroke. Katie Ledecky led the women’s 4x200m freestyle relay team to win a silver medal. The U.S. men’s rowing team captured its first gold medal since 1960. The U.S. women’s fencing team won gold in the foil final, the first gold medal for an American fencing team. The U.S. women’s basketball team went to 2-0 in group play with a win over Belgium.
