1. Hurricane Idalia strengthened to a dangerous Category 4 storm this morning as it heads toward Florida’s Big Bend region. Life-threatening storm surges with 130 mph winds and rainfall are expected. Idalia will also affect parts of southern Georgia, and the southeastern Carolinas from Wednesday afternoon through Thursday. (WMTW)
2. Portland voters will choose from five candidates running for mayor this November (Pious Ali, Justin Costa, Mark Dion, Dylan Pugh, Andrew Zarro). Candidates were required to hand in signatures to qualify for the ballot by the end of the day Monday. Mayoral candidates don’t run on a party affiliation, but all are Democrats. Current Mayor Kate Snyder is not seeking reelection. (PH)
3. A Westbrook man crashed a UPS truck into Red’s Eats in Wiscasset Sunday morning, totaling the patio. He said he hydroplaned. Police found no evidence of that and believe “speed and fatigue” are to blame. (PH)
4. Keep your eye on the sky tonight! There will be a rare Blue Supermoon. The peak will appear at 9:36 p.m. A blue moon is the 2nd full moon of the month. A supermoon is when the moon is its closest point to the Earth. (WGME)
5. On Tuesday, Apple sent out invites for its September 12 press event. Apple is expected to announce the iPhone 15 and new Apple Watches. The launch event will be streamed on Apple’s website at 1 p.m. ET. (CNBC)
