1. Nurses at Maine Medical Center are rallying today in support of a coworker detained by ICE. The nurses’ union says Debora Kapisha was taken into custody at Boston Logan Airport last week despite being legally authorized to live and work in the U.S. while her asylum case is pending. The union is calling for her release and says she’s expected to be transferred to a detention facility in Louisiana. (WMTW)
2. A former Auburn substitute teacher has been indicted on a charge of gross sexual assault after prosecutors say he had an ongoing sexual relationship with a 17-year-old student at an alternative school. Investigators allege the encounters happened in a classroom, a school quiet room, and at a hotel in Bath while he was in a position of authority over the student. (PH)
3. Two juvenile great white sharks, each estimated to be 6 to 8 feet long, were spotted off Pine Point Beach in Scarborough Tuesday. The sightings were reported near the southern tip of Prouts Neck and the mouth of the Scarborough River, and police are urging anyone in the area to use caution while in the water. (WGME)
4. Portland officials are reacting with cautious optimism to Hearts of Pine’s proposal for a new $50 million waterfront soccer stadium at Cassidy Point. The plan would remove the longtime coal pile, create a year-round community space with public waterfront access, and become the future home for the club’s men’s and women’s teams, but city leaders say questions about traffic, parking, and the working waterfront still need to be answered before construction could begin in 2027.
