1. Federal authorities in Pennsylvania announced indictments against the “Fentanyl Robbery Gang” or “FRG”. The group used dating websites to connect with men interested in hiring prostitutes to drug and rob them. The group maintained a residence, considered their “homebase” in Gardiner, Maine. (PH)
2. Yesterday the Maine State Police bomb squad was on scene at Ralph’s Café, a brunch spot in Waldo County, after the restaurant received a bomb threat. The threat was confirmed to be a hoax. The café’s owner was recently targeted by right-wing media after posting a joke about the assassination attempt on Trump. “Hey guy with the bad aim. You had one job.” (PH)
3. The Maine Attorney General is looking into complaints that a parking enforcement company hired by the USM has used predatory tactics to squeeze money out of campus visitors. The complaints say $55 parking fines are unreasonable compared to the $1 an hour cost of parking on the Gorham campus, that signs explaining the parking enforcement system are inadequate, and that the company consistently and wrongly tickets people who drive on campus to drop off or pick up someone and never actually park. 4. Skechers has sued L.L.Bean in federal court over claims the Maine company copied part of the design of its shoes. The suit alleges that L.L.Bean’s Freeport shoe uses a “heel cup” design that resembles a common external heel design Skechers uses, and has a patent. (BDN)
5. UMaine junior first baseman Jeremiah Jenkins was chosen in the 14th round by the San Francisco Giants in the Major League draft on Tuesday. He is the seventh Black Bear to be drafted over the past six years. (BDN)
