1. A candlelight vigil organized by members of Westbrook and surrounding communities was held on Friday night at Riverside Park to remember the victims of the tragic shooting that occurred last week. The motive behind the shooting remains undisclosed, and it is unclear whether the suspect had any prior connection to the victims. (WMTW)
2. A Brunswick man has been arrested after allegedly making threats and displaying a rifle in the Burger King drive-thru on Forest Ave in Portland. Friday night, after more than two hours of negotiations, chemical irritants were used to safely remove him from his vehicle and take him into custody. An AR-15 rifle containing almost 60 rounds of ammunition was found in the suspect’s vehicle. (WGME)
3. Lewiston High School’s sports complex was vandalized on Friday night. It looked like a group had ransacked cabinets, emptied drink coolers and littered trash within the building and surrounding field. Last Tuesday, the city council discussed a possible ordinance that could change the hours the complex is open and maybe even lock the gates. (WGME)
4. Sunrise Growers has issued a massive recall of its frozen fruit over pineapple possibly contaminated with listeria. In addition to pineapple products, mangoes, cherries, strawberries, bananas and more were listed in the recall. This frozen fruit was sold at Walmart, Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, and several other retailers. Trader Joe’s in Maine were specifically mentioned in the recall notice. (FDA)
5. Portland Sea Dogs mascot Slugger will be inducted into the Mascot Hall of Fame in Indiana for the class of 2023. The induction ceremony is set for Saturday, August 12th. Translated by his spokesperson, Slugger said “I share this honor with my fans (friends), the city of Portland, and the state of Maine.” Entering 2023, the Mascot Hall of Fame was composed of 27 mascots including Benny the Bull from the Chicago Bulls, the Phillie Phanatic, and Globie from the Harlem Globetrotters. Slugger will be the first minor league mascot inducted. (Sea Dogs)
