1. President Biden approved Maine’s request for a Major Disaster Declaration to address an estimated $70 million in damage to public infrastructure from storms on Jan. 10 and 13. Individual Mainers can also receive funds to repair severe property damage. (WMTW)
2. Maine has voted against a plan to establish emission standards for new vehicles. If it had been approved, 51% of new vehicle sales or leases in Maine would have been zero-emission vehicles by model year 2028. That would have increased to 82% in model year 2032. (WMTW)
3. Health organizations are using the hashtag #VasMadness to promote vasectomies ahead of the NCAA basketball tournaments. Of the approximately 500,000 men in the U.S. who get vasectomies in a year, a large percentage of them get it scheduled in March. 4. UMaine hockey fans will be able to buy beer at games next season. The university announced on Wednesday it will create a beer garden likely to be adjacent to the school’s Alfond Arena. It will be open to all ticket-holders at least 21 years of age and further details will be released this summer. (BDN)
5. Julia Gagnon, a USM senior, is hoping to secure a gold ticket to Hollywood and compete on American Idol for its 22nd season. Gagnon competed at Central Maine Idol, where she won first place. Her audition will air this Sunday on ABC at 8 pm. (WMTW)
