1. Deadly weather across 13 states affected more than 120 million Americans over Memorial Day weekend. The storms have killed 22 as devastating tornadoes and thunderstorms ripped across the central US, also leaving more than 600,000 without power. Kentucky declared a state of emergency on Monday. Meteorologists have added that this summer will possibly see an “extraordinary” 2024 Atlantic hurricane season, which begins next month. (BBC)
2. Basketball legend Bill Walton, who led the UCLA Bruins to two national titles before winning two NBA championships (one with the Celtics), has died at the age of 71 after a prolonged battle with cancer. Younger fans will know him better from his broadcasting career. In 2009, the American Sportscasters Assn named him one of the 50 greatest sportscasters of all time. He was also well-known as a dedicated Grateful Dead fan. (ESPN)
3. The Boston Celtics have a chance to win their 18th NBA title after sweeping the Indiana Pacers in the Eastern Conference Finals. Jaylen Brown was named MVP of the series. The Celtics will either face the Dallas Mavericks or Minnesota Timberwolves in the NBA Finals, which begin June 6. (WMTW)
4. Maine’s American Idol, Julia Gagnon, is planning a Maine summer tour, visiting and performing at 15 to 20 sites. Full tour details will likely be announced in the coming weeks. Her July 13th performance at the Moxie Festival in Lisbon Falls has already been announced. Gagnon told the Press Herald she’s working on a song about Maine that she plans to record soon. (PH)
