1. Hamas launched surprise attacks Saturday morning from Gaza into Israel. One attack happened at a music festival near the border, killing at least 260. Since the conflict began, more than 900 Israelis have been confirmed dead, and 2,150 injured. In response more than 680 Palestinians have been killed. President Biden said at least 11 Americans were killed in the Hamas attacks, and others are likely being held as hostages. (CNN)
2. One person was killed and three others were injured after a sailboat’s main mast snapped and fell onto the ship in Rockland. The 118-foot ship, Grace Bailey, was built in 1882. It regularly runs 3-6 day charters and offers a full catering service and a sea exploration of Rockland for up to 29 passengers at a time. The Coast Guard is launching an investigation. (WGME)
3. The Wabanaki Alliance held a rally on Monday to advocate for a “yes” vote on ballot Question 6. When Maine separated from Mass, there were clauses that included obligations toward the Wabanaki Tribe, while those clauses remain in effect, they aren’t printed in the official Maine constitution. 4. Fares could go up as much as $6 to ride the Amtrak Downeaster one-way between Brunswick and Boston. A final decision will be made on Oct. 23. The fare change is anticipated to go into effect on or about Nov. 1, 2023. (WMTW)
5. The Mount Washington Observatory says the summit saw its first measurable snowfall of the season on Sunday with 0.3 inches of snow. Temperatures at the summit were not expected to rise above freezing until the end of the week. (WMTW)
