1. Hollywood legend Robert Redford died Tuesday at the age of 89. Known for classics like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Way We Were, All the President’s Men and The Natural, Redford also won an Oscar for directing Ordinary People and founded the Sundance Institute and Film Festival. He left his mark on Maine with visits to Bowdoin in 1982 and Colby’s 2015 commencement. He urged students to embrace hope and collaboration in a divided world. (PH)
2. South Portland police say a 33-year-old Windham man admitted to stealing more than 500 items — mostly vinyl records — from Newbury Comics at the Maine Mall. The thefts, worth over $25,000, happened over 18 months. Police say they tracked him down with help from pawn shops and a public tip. He’s now facing theft charges. (WMTW)
3. In Westbrook, a rental truck slammed into the low railroad bridge on Brown Street Tuesday morning, tearing the top and back off the box and spilling cabinets inside. No one was hurt, but traffic was detoured while crews cleaned up. Police say this bridge has seen multiple similar crashes in the past year. (WMTW)
4. Fall is getting warmer in Maine. Since 1970, Portland’s average autumn temperature has climbed nearly four degrees. On average, we now see 18 more days in the fall that have above-normal temperatures when compared to 1970. Experts say the trend is expected to continue, with above-average temps likely through the rest of September and into November. (WGME)
5. Japanese restaurant Watami has opened a new location in Portland’s Old Port, taking over the former Sapporo space on Commercial Street. The spot seats about 100 people and serves sushi, ramen, poke, hibachi, boba teas and even Cuban coffee. It’s the second Watami, after their Brunswick location. (PH)
