1. A weekend nor’easter is heading toward Maine, but the heaviest rain may hold off until late Saturday. Showers could continue through Sunday and into Monday, with southwestern Maine potentially picking up 1 to 2 inches. 2. Heating oil prices in Maine have hit a new record high, averaging $6.02 a gallon — up 81% from this time last year. That breaks the previous record set in 2022. Filling a standard 275-gallon tank now costs about $740 more than it did a year ago.
2. The Scotia Prince ferry could be returning to Portland more than 20 years after its last voyage to Nova Scotia. The company is exploring an overnight, 11-hour ferry service featuring restaurants, entertainment and an onboard casino. Talks with Portland are still preliminary, with no timeline set for its return. (PH)
3. Bangor’s W.A. Bean has switched to all-natural coloring for its iconic red snapper hot dogs ahead of a federal ban on artificial red dye. Sales director Sean Smith says there’s “absolutely no taste difference, same snap and red snapper color.” The new hot dogs are already available at the company’s store and will hit other retail shelves soon. 4. Today is National Lobster Day, celebrating one of Maine’s most iconic industries. The September 25th observance was established by the U.S. Senate in 2015 at the request of Maine’s lobster industry. It also falls during Maine Lobster Week, with restaurant specials and events running through Saturday.
