1. A chartered bus carrying Bates College first-year students returning from a canoeing trip got stuck on a tilt and nearly slid down an embankment on a narrow gravel road near Lower Richardson Lake. The driver safely evacuated all 20 students and local residents helped secure the bus until authorities arrived. (PH)
2. JetBlue will launch a daily flight from Boston to Presque Isle starting today. JetBlue says the new route offers residents of northern Maine and New Brunswick convenient access to the city of Boston and dozens of other JetBlue partner airline destinations around the globe. (WMTW)
3. The Maine Principals’ Association is no longer requiring high school soccer players in the state to wear mouth guards during games. A major argument for removing mouth guards was players’ struggles with on-the-field communication while wearing them. (WMTW)
4. A new “container potty” has opened in the Portland arts district. The public restroom includes two gender-neutral stalls, including one that is handicap accessible. It will be cleaned twice daily and remain open 8am – 8pm until November. (WGME)
5. McDonald’s will phase out McFlurry cup lids and instead begin serving the treat in a “more environmentally friendly four-cup flap.” The new packaging will roll out in restaurants nationwide starting on Sept. 10. A “Mini McFlurry” will also hit the menu for those friends who always want “just a bite.” (People)
