1. The sister of Republican candidate for Maine governor Bobby Charles says she’ll vote for his Democratic opponent, Hannah Pingree, in November. Anita Charles wrote in a Portland Press Herald op-ed that she cannot support her brother because of what she called his “divisive rhetoric” and his positions on abortion, schools and vulnerable communities. Charles’ campaign had not responded to the criticism as of Wednesday morning. (PH)
2. Charges are expected against the driver who crashed into Heathco’s Pizza & Variety in Auburn early Labor Day morning. Police say 21-year-old driver suffered life-threatening injuries, and speed was a factor in the crash with investigators also looking at possible impairment. The restaurant remains closed with hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage. (WMTW)
3. MaineDOT has released video showing last month’s bridge collapse into the Stillwater River in Old Town. Investigators believe one of the bridge’s outer girders buckled, triggering a chain reaction that brought the span down. Three workers were injured, and officials still don’t know how much the collapse will cost or how long it will delay the project. (WMTW)
4. A United Airlines flight from Milan to Newark was diverted to Bangor Tuesday because of an unruly passenger. Police met the plane when it landed and removed the passenger before the flight continued on to Newark. United has not said what the passenger did to force the diversion. (NCM)
5. Football is back tonight — on a Wednesday. The Patriots visit the defending Super Bowl champion Seahawks in Seattle, where the Seahawks will raise their championship banner. The unusual Wednesday kickoff comes ahead of Thursday night’s Rams-49ers game in Melbourne, Australia. (NFL)
