Tennis legend Serena Williams will be officially eligible to return to professional competition on February 22nd! At 44 years old, she just reached the milestone after spending six months in the sport’s mandatory drug-testing pool, a required step for any player returning from retirement.
Despite the paperwork, Williams recently downplayed the comeback rumors on social media, telling fans: “Omg yall I’m NOT coming back. This wildfire is crazy.” Officials say it remains unclear if Williams is planning a competitive return or simply giving herself the option to play again in the future.
The 23-time Grand Slam champion has not competed since the 2022 U.S. Open, when she famously declared she was “evolving away” from the game. The U.S. Tennis Association says it would “enthusiastically welcome” her back if she decides to compete at the professional level again.
