1. Two Mainers are getting back about 470-thousand dollars after losing more than 800-thousand in a cryptocurrency scam. The FBI was able to recover part of the money, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office is reminding residents to report scams immediately. (WGME)
2. The University of Maine is proposing to eliminate its master’s degree in teaching Spanish and suspend its medical laboratory sciences degree due to low enrollment and an $18 million budget shortfall. The changes still require final approval from the UMaine System Board of Trustees. (PH)
3. Gorham native Eric Saindon won his second Oscar for visual effects for Avatar: Fire and Ash. A documentary about Maine-born poet Andrea Gibson was also nominated but did not take home the award. (PH)
4. The field of 68 is set for the NCAA basketball tournaments. Number one seeds Duke, Arizona, Michigan, and Florida lead the men’s bracket, while number one seeds UConn, UCLA, Texas, and South Carolina top the women’s field. The men’s First Four games are Tuesday and Wednesday, with the first round tipping off Thursday. The women’s tournament starts a day later.
5. Portland turned green yesterday for the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade, as hundreds lined Commercial Street to celebrate Irish culture with bagpipes, dancers, and festive community spirit. (PH)
