Maine students have an incredible opportunity when it comes to higher education, and York County Community College is helping spread the word!
I spoke with Stacy and Tracy from YCCC about Maine’s tuition-free community college program, which has now been made permanent for the Class of 2026 and beyond. The program allows eligible students to attend any of Maine’s seven community colleges tuition-free after all applicable federal and state grant aid has been applied. It was first introduced in 2022 and has become a valuable pathway for students looking to learn a trade, prepare to transfer to a four-year school, or gain the skills needed for a successful career.
For students graduating in 2026 and beyond, the program covers 100% of tuition. While it does not automatically cover books, supplies, or additional fees, many students who qualify for grants and scholarships may have extra funding available to help with those costs.
Stacy and Tracy emphasized one of the most important steps in the process: filing the FAFSA. Completing the FAFSA helps determine eligibility for federal and state financial aid and is required for students hoping to take advantage of the tuition-free opportunity.
Students do not need to complete a separate application for the program. Once they apply to one of Maine’s community colleges, they are automatically considered if they meet the eligibility requirements.
Beyond the tuition-free program, YCCC is also celebrating a season of student success. The college is recognizing graduates through commencement, nursing pinnings, vet tech pinnings, and awards honoring student athletes and academic achievement!
