I caught up with local restaurateur Sai Guntaka to discuss his growing restaurant businesses, recent recognition, and the incredible ways he’s giving back to the Maine community!
Sai’s journey began in 2012 when he was just 18 years old. After moving from Texas, he and his family opened Taj in South Portland. Since then, the family business has expanded to include Silver Street by Taj, an intimate cocktail lounge in Portland, and Cobblestone, a coffee shop, bakery, and brunch spot located in Taj’s original space.
But beyond serving delicious food, Sai and his team are making a difference in the community. What started during the pandemic as a way to provide meals for MaineHealth first responders has evolved into an ongoing feeding program at Taj! A cabinet with a red door is stocked with free meat and vegetarian meals throughout the day for anyone who needs one. No questions asked. If the cabinet is empty, guests can simply ask inside.
Cobblestone also plays an important role in keeping the initiative going, with profits remaining after operating expenses helping fund the meals. Sai credits his hardworking staff and the support of the Maine community for making it all possible.
His dedication hasn’t gone unnoticed! Taj recently received recognition from OpenTable as a local favorite, while Sai was named to Mainebiz’s prestigious 40 Under 40 list.
And he’s not slowing down! Sai and business partner Jim are preparing to open Il Forno, a new Italian restaurant just steps away from Taj, featuring Neapolitan-style pizza, fresh pasta made in front of guests, and an open kitchen.
From building successful restaurants to ensuring his neighbors have access to a warm meal, Sai continues to show what it means to give back to the community that supports you. Listen to our full convo below to learn more!
