Jay-Z has officially announced an 8-part documentary series coming to HBO this fall! The new project is titled “Jay-Z in 8,” and Rick Rubin will direct the entire series.
It features extended, intimate conversations between the two longtime collaborators as they break down the music, lyrics, and creative process behind the catalog. In a newly released teaser, Jay-Z said he uses his personal hardships as inspiration. He said that while pain isn’t strictly necessary, “if it’s there, you use it.”

Rubin and Jay-Z share a long creative history, most famously collaborating on the 2003 hit single “99 Problems.” Actor Daniel Kaluuya is set to serve as an executive producer on the project as well.
The documentary announcement arrives as Jay-Z celebrates major career milestones this year, including the 30th anniversary of his debut album, “Reasonable Doubt.” I can’t wait to watch it!
