3. Health officials are investigating a surge in cyclospora, a parasite that’s sickened more than 700 people in Michigan and hospitalized at least 20 people nationwide. The CDC says cases have been reported in at least 17 states, including Maine, and the illness—often linked to contaminated fresh produce—can cause severe watery diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea and vomiting, with symptoms appearing 2 to 14 days after exposure.
4. Maine’s 211 hotline is celebrating 20 years of connecting people with help. The free service, available 24/7, links Mainers to resources like food assistance, heating help, mental health and substance use services, and is answered by a live person every day of the year. (WGME)
