1. Biddeford Mayor Liam LaFountain is again calling for a transparent, independent investigation into Monday’s fatal ICE shooting of Johan Sebastián Guerrero. The mayor criticized the lack of body cameras on the federal agents involved and says Guerrero’s family, witnesses and the community continue to receive mental health support as protests continue across southern Maine. Federal officials are refusing to identify the ICE agent who fatally shot. ICE says releasing the officer’s name could put the agent and their family at risk. The Atlantic reports the agent was hired earlier this year after previously serving with the Department of Veterans Affairs Police, but officials have not confirmed that report. (WGME)
2. Wildfire smoke from Canada is expected to drift back into Maine today, creating hazy skies and moderate air pollution. While Maine has not issued an Air Quality Alert, alerts are in effect across at least 17 other states, and people with asthma or other respiratory conditions are urged to limit prolonged time outdoors. 3. With cyclospora cases on the rise, health experts say foods with thick, peelable skins are among the safest choices. Bananas, avocados, kiwis and potatoes are all considered lower risk because peeling removes any contamination that may be on the surface.
