What if a song could tell you a story before you ever read the first page of a book? That’s the idea behind Gracen Thorne Unveiled, a “music first” story world created by Maine author, lyricist and creator Pamela Hurley Moser. The project combines original music with a trilogy of novels, allowing the story to unfold through both sound and literature.
Pamela recently joined me in studio to talk about the inspiration behind the project, the deeply personal origins of its music and the idea of living behind a “veil.” She has written approximately 26 singles, with the first album featuring 10 songs. Rather than simply serving as a soundtrack or summary of the novels, the songs are an integral part of the storytelling! The music is being released gradually, with songs rolling out across platforms including Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube and Amazon Music as listeners are introduced to the world of Gracen Thorne.
At the heart of the project is a question about identity. Pamela describes the story as being about people who live “veiled” lives – the versions of ourselves we construct because of expectations, social approval or the desire to fit in. The inspiration for that theme came from an unexpected moment involving her husband’s artwork. Her husband had created a sculpture of Pamela and wrapped it in cellophane. Seeing her own likeness behind that covering caused Pamela to reflect on the different layers people accumulate throughout their lives and led her to question who she might have been before adapting herself to the expectations around her. That question ultimately became the foundation for Gracen Thorne Unveiled.
The story follows three central characters, Gracen Thorne, Isaac and Jacob, over approximately 50 years and across five continents. While the characters and their stories are fictional, Pamela drew heavily from her own experiences when creating the project. Some of the lyrics originated in personal journals where she had stored years of poetry and songwriting. Those words eventually became songs and helped shape the emotional world of the novels.
Pamela has written the trilogy of novels, but the books have not yet been published or assigned to a publisher. In the meantime, she is continuing to build out the musical side of the project, with a second album already underway!
For Pamela, Gracen Thorne Unveiled is ultimately about much more than a fictional character or a collection of songs. It’s about the parts of ourselves we hide, the identities we create for other people and what happens when we finally begin to take those layers away.
