1. A Portland man has been sentenced to 16 years in prison for fatally stabbing his roommate in their West End apartment in 2024. Investigators say a woman staying at the apartment witnessed Domingus Nobrega stab 43-year-old Matthew Merrick in the chest. Police say Nobrega then gave the witness drugs and asked her to blame the killing on someone else. (WGME)
2. A nurse fired during a union organizing effort at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston is getting their job back. The union says Prime Healthcare fired 14 nurses and disciplined six others after nurses filed for a union election. CMMC has denied the discipline was retaliation, saying it involved policy and patient-safety violations. Nurses later voted 91% in favor of unionizing. (WGME)
3. That massive industrial load that’s been disrupting traffic across Maine for the past week has finally reached South Portland. The 683,000-pound, nearly 220-foot-long generator left Jay last Tuesday and was supposed to arrive the next day, but the trip took several extra days because of slower-than-expected progress. It arrived at Turner Island early Tuesday morning and will eventually be shipped south by boat. (WGME)
4. Maine author Stephen King was the most-banned author in U.S. public schools for the second straight year, according to PEN America. King’s books were pulled 312 times, with “The Shining” and “The Green Mile” removed the most. Many of his books have been challenged over mature content, including violence and sexual themes. (WGME)
5. New England dominates a new WalletHub ranking of the safest states in America. Vermont ranks number one, followed by Massachusetts at number two, Maine at number three, New Hampshire at four and Connecticut at five. Rhode Island also made the top 10 at number nine. Maine scored especially well for low levels of violent crime and emergency preparedness. (WH)
