1. First Lady Melania Trump is recovering at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, after undergoing kidney surgery on Monday morning. According to the White House, the 48-year-old wife of President Donald Trump had an “embolization procedure to treat a benign kidney condition;” the procedure was “successful” and there were no complications. 2. A man was shot and killed early Monday in a confrontation with a state trooper in the Androscoggin County town of Wales, according to Maine State Police. William N. Derick, 54, was fatally shot at his mobile home at 485 Pond Road. The shooting occurred after police were called to the home off Route 132 Sunday night for a report of a domestic violence incident in which a gunshot was fired at a woman. The woman was not injured. 4. On Friday night, some students were surprised and upset to find a live tiger at Christopher Columbus High School’s jungle-themed prom at a hotel near Miami (Fla.) International Airport. School officials initially defended their decision to have the tiger on hand, while denying allegations that it was being mistreated. On Monday, however, the school reversed course, releasing a statement which read, “Upon reflection, we regret the decision to have live animals at our prom.” The Miami Herald reports that a fox, a lemur and two parrots also attended the prom.
